Introduction Expository preaching and teaching must always be text-controlled, in that its raison d’être is to seek to understand the living and enduring Word of God, as written. Classically, this has rightly centred on systematic consecutive exposition of books, or parts of books, setting the material in its own context, within the book and thus within the Bible, as a whole. But how is doctrine to be taught? For the classic Bible expositor the answer has been (again rightly, I think) as and when
